Biography

I have over 35 years' experience in education. The past nine years I have been a National Literacy Consultant at Benchmark Education Company. I began my career as a Bilingual/ESL teacher in Houston ISD and Ft. Worth ISD, Texas. I taught a variety of subjects in English and Spanish to early childhood monolingual students in a self-contained classroom. I have also been a National Consultant at Voyager Sopris Learning for ten years and a Senior Curriculum Specialist at CompassLearning, where I was instrumental in improving student achievement by using the CompassLearning assessment, curriculum, and management system. While there I helped write a new Social Studies curriculum for CompassLearning iView™ program (Grades 6-12) that incorporated online projects from USA Today, Facts.com, and Teen Newsweek. I am fluent in Spanish and holds certifications in Bilingual and ESL instruction for the state of Texas. I have conducted educational workshops and sales presentations in English and Spanish in 44 states and 7 countries. I also volunteered to teach English to immigrant adults in an immersion environment in the evenings and helped select materials that related to their everyday environment. My degrees in Spanish and in Financial Institutions prepared me well for my career.
