Biography

Maria Elena Guzman has been a NYC DOE educator for 28 years. She began her career in education as an ESL Teacher, then as a Bilingual Classroom Teacher, Dual Language Teacher and continued as an Instructional Coach in a K-5 school. For the last 19 years, she has worked with the UFT Teacher Center, first as a School-Based Coach and currently as an Instructional Field Liaison supporting school districts in the Bronx. She is also a member of the English as a New Language Team. In her current role, she designs and facilitates professional learning opportunities for teachers, paraprofessionals and school leaders on the elementary and secondary school levels as well as for all new UFT Teacher Center Instructional Coaches. Maria Elena has been a member of the AFT ELL CADRE for the last 6 years and has been a facilitator for the AFT CSI conference for the past 7 years. Additionally, as a member of the NYSUT English Language Committee, she collaborates with other state educators to advocate for English as a New Language education.
