Biography

Magdalena Pando is an associate professor of bilingual education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Methodist University. Her research agenda sustains a social justice orientation that aims to leverage access, equity and opportunity in education. Her work bridges the field of teacher education, science disciplinary language and literacy, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching informed by theoretical frameworks such as sociocultural theory, systemic functional linguistics, sociolinguistics, constructivist theory, second language acquisition and culturally relevant education. Her latest research integrates generative artificial intelligence technologies into her teaching and scholarship for teacher professional development in STEM and language teaching. Dr. Pando publishes journal articles in the Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Science Teacher Education, Journal of Engineering Education, and the Journal of Bilingual Education Research and Instruction. She has published multiple chapters in edited books about science and language integrated education. Dr. Pando shares a passion to work with K-12 teachers who serve students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, girls in STEM education, emergent bilingual and LGBTQ+ students of color. She has developed Educator Preparation Programs intended to increase teacher certifications in bilingual and ESL education. She has secured over $8 million in external and internal funding for research and service projects that serve to create equitable learning opportunities for students from underrepresented populations. Currently, she is acting Chair of the Bilingual Education Research Special Interest group at the American Education Research Association.
