Lucila D. Ek is the Dr. Bertha Perez Endowed Distinguished Professor in Biliteracy in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She obtained her Ph.D. in Urban Education from the University of California at Los Angeles and had a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Ek was born in Yucatan, Mexico and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of four. Prior to becoming a professor, she was a bilingual/bicultural educator at an elementary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Dr. Ek’s research focuses on the language and literacy of Chicanx/Latinx students and bilingual teacher education. Her scholarship has been published in such journals as Anthropology & Education Quarterly, The Urban Review, International Multilingual Research Journal, and the Bilingual Research Journal.
