Biography

Dr. Basel Touchan is the Multilingual, Migrant, and Refugee Lead at the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Office in Kentucky's second-largest school district, serving over 42,000 students across 95 languages. Holding an M.D. from Aleppo University, Syria, he leverages his healthcare expertise and a decade of experience in supporting refugees, newcomers, and systemically disempowered communities. His work is dedicated to transforming and building equitable systems where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential. In addition to his primary role, Dr. Touchan is a Learning and Development Consultant, and he serves as the Co-Chair of the LGBT+ Special Interest Community of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Moreover, Dr. Touchan is a Board Member of the ACLU of Kentucky, the Kentucky Coalition for English Learners, and the Lexington-Fayette County Department of Health. He also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Mayor’s International Affairs Advisory Commission in Lexington, KY.
