Dr. Mayra Ortiz Galarza is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at UTRGV. Dr. Ortiz Galarza advances and supports STEM education research and reforms. She uses project-based learning to advance professional practice in STEM education. Dr. Ortiz Galarza has been an educator in multiple cultural settings and serves as a role model, mentor, and innovator of ways to improve minority and underserved students’ participation in STEM. Dr. Ortiz Galarza’s multidisciplinary background comprised of engineering, mathematics education, and teaching, learning and culture has contributed to the research focusing in the areas of mathematics identity, informal learning, near- peer mentoring, and institutional transformation.
