Biography

Jeanine (Jean) Harvey is an educator with over 20+ years of experience supporting multilingual students. She has been a classroom teacher, a college professor, and a school leader. At the district level, Jean led the secondary literacy department at Denver Public Schools including the rollout of Common Core State Standards and the introduction of content and language objectives. In a district that is over 60% multilingual learners, Jean addressed the need for language support in literacy materials and developed a myriad of supports that were embedded in secondary literacy curricular materials. Eventually, Jean moved to the English Language Acquisition team and supported all secondary schools with MLL documentation, testing, and instructional support. Under her leadership, secondary enrollment in English Language Development classes increased 60%, and she supported high schools to implement innovative ELD approaches. She helped to lead the team that brought the Seal of Biliteracy to Colorado, and her work has been implemented across Colorado and other states. Jean has also worked with Instructional Superintendents in Denver, and she led all work concerning data, assessment, and instructional support, and she ensured multilingual learners were part of all educational conversations and initiatives. She coached principals in strategizing instructional plans, and she supported them in progress monitoring their educational programs. Currently, Jean is the Director of Multilingual Learner Academics at TNTP where she leads teacher and leader training, supports for newcomers and SLIFE students, community engagement initiatives, and other exciting projects focusing on multilingual learners.
