Biography

I am an Assistant Professor and the curriculum anchor for Special Populations- Special Education at Texas Tech University in the Teacher Education Department. Before joining Texas Tech University, I was a special education teacher, intervention specialist, and educational diagnostician in rural and urban Texas school districts. My research focuses on 1) preparing teacher candidates for multispecialty certifications, (2) examining teacher candidates’ self-efficacy for teaching special populations, and (3) using real-time data to inform teacher education course development. Teaching is a fundamental part of my identity as an academic. I strive to help pre-service teachers understand the barriers that can sometimes impact students’ academic achievement and learn how to apply research-based strategies and culturally responsive pedagogy across content areas. I strive to create learning experiences that provide pre-service teachers with authentic examples, scenarios, and situations in which to explore and practice the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to become inclusive practitioners.
