Biography

I work at the intersection of research, policy and practice in the field of immigration. For three decades I have focused on improving public schools and community-based programs serving migrant and refugee children, youth and adults and explored educational pathways of migrant youth and the intersections of race, language and migration. I am Director of Research and Innovation at Internationals Network for Public Schools https://www.internationalsnetwork.org and part-time faculty at New York University. My roles over the years have included classroom teacher, program director, curriculum developer, evaluator, academic and researcher at the community college and university level in both public and private institution. I am on the board of the Center for Applied Linguistics (https://www.cal.org/), the advisory board of the European Union Project CIRCE (https://www.circe-project.eu), the Global Coalition for Language Rights, and CREA (Centro de Recursos Educativos para Adultos). In addition, I work directly with NGOs to promote educational equity for migrants and refugees. My scholarship and research on second language learning, literacy, and the education of immigrant education of immigrant populations has appeared in International Multilingual Research Journal TESOL Quarterly, Journal of Latinos and Education, Urban Education, Teachers College Record, and Rethinking Schools. She speaks Spanish, German, Italian and English.
