Adam Gushgari
Biography
Dr. Adam Gushgari is an environmental engineer and recognized leader in wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and analytical chemistry. He serves as Director of Wastewater Surveillance at Eurofins Environment Testing, where he leads national and international programs that use wastewater to monitor community health and emerging public health threats. Dr. Gushgari earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Arizona State University, where his research pioneered the use of LC-MS/MS to detect opioids and other high-risk substances in wastewater. His work was the first to detect fentanyl in U.S. wastewaters, and ultimately helped launch the City of Tempe Wastewater BioIntel Program, one of the first and longest running municipal WBE initiatives in the United States. In the private sector, Dr. Gushgari has directed the expansion of wastewater surveillance programs across the U.S. and abroad, including collaborations with the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System, the Boston Public Health Commission, the City of Tempe, and across the U.K. through a collaboration with the U.K. home office. His efforts have also extended internationally through Eurofins Foundation projects supporting capacity building in countries such as Malawi, Africa. Dr. Gushgari’s expertise centers on advancing LC-MS/MS and digital PCR methodologies for high-risk substance detection, fostering public-private partnerships, and translating wastewater data into actionable intelligence for public health decision-making.
