Yao Liu MD MS, is an Assistant Professor and Director of Teleophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Liu is studying whether low macular pigment levels are associated with an increased risk of glaucoma within a 15-year follow-up longitudinal cohort of older women participating in the National Eye Institute (NEI) R01-funded Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (CAREDS2). With funding from the AGS, the ultimate goal of these studies is to determine whether low-cost dietary supplementation of lutein/zeaxanthin may prevent glaucoma. She is also the Study Chair and Principal Investigator of the NIH/NEI UG1-funded I-TRUST Study (Implementation of Teleophthalmology in Rural Health Systems), a multicenter clinical trial to advance telemedicine-based diabetic eye screening in rural primary care clinics using implementation science. She completed medical school in the Harvard-MIT HST Program, ophthalmology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and glaucoma fellowship at the University of California-Davis Eye Center.
