Mark Abendroth, Ed.D. is a professor of education at SUNY Empire State University. He is completing his 17th year in this state-wide online university that serves working adults, and his home office is in Albany. He teaches mainly in the MA in Teaching program in social studies education but also in the advanced certificate in TESOL. Dr. Abendroth's secondary teaching experience of nine years includes seven in the St. Paul Public Schools, where he taught social studies and English as a second language in two secondary schools. His first job as a K-12 teacher of record was in an English-immersion school in Salvador, Brazil. Dr. Abendroth has authored two books: Song, Struggle, and Solidarity: The NYC Labor Chorus in Its 25th Year (Hamilton Books, 2020); and Rebel Literacy: Cuba’s National Literacy Campaign and Critical Global Citizenship (Litwin Books, 2009). He also has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals. His ongoing research interests include teaching social movements, integrating arts in social studies, and multicultural/multilingual education. Dr. Abendroth’s Ed.D. from the University of St. Thomas is in critical pedagogy, and he continues to learn toward being more effective as an instructor and scholar for social justice. When time permits, Dr. Abendroth enjoys cross-country skiing, hiking, whitewater kayaking, and playing and singing traditional Celtic music with others. He has been married for 20 years, and his wife is from Bogotá, Colombia.
