Biography

I am a Glaucoma Specialist and a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. I am also the Training Director for the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields. I received my Medical Degree, MSc in Medical Research Methodology and PhD in Ocular Blood Flow from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, with a Scholarship Award for excellence in PhD studies. I completed my Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology at the same University Hospital. I qualified as a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), with a 2nd place award among 358 candidates from 25 European countries. This was followed by advanced subspecialty training in the medical and surgical management of Glaucoma at St Thomas’ Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. I have also received the FEBO Specialist Diploma in Glaucoma. I have always enjoyed teaching and have held teaching positions at the Department of Undergraduate Education at Moorfields, initially as a Teaching Fellow and then as the Deputy Director for Undergraduate Teaching. Since 2020 I have been organising and chairing the Departmental Teaching of the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields. For the academic year 2024-2025, I was also the Glaucoma Module Lead for the MSc in Ophthalmology at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. My main research interests include epidemiology, randomised controlled trials and glaucoma complex genetics. I have co-authored 43 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals (Scopus ID: 23469171600, h-index 22), the 4th and 5th Edition of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS) “Terminology and Guidelines for glaucoma”, and the “Consensus Series from the World Glaucoma Association” in 2016 and 2019. I am also a contributor to the “Guide on surgical innovation for glaucoma” recently published by the EGS. I have been serving for many years as a reviewer for several scientific journals, including the British Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Glaucoma. Since June 2024, I am an elected Member of the Executive Committee of the EGS. In this capacity, I am currently leading the EGS Task Force Group “A guide on surgical innovation in bleb-forming procedures” with the objective to provide an overview of the existing evidence, as well as clinical recommendations on traditional and newer glaucoma surgery.
