Biography

Alexander Meves, M.D., M.B.A., is a distinguished consultant in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he holds the academic rank of associate professor in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Meves joined Mayo Clinic in 2008, after completing his medical degree at the Heinrich-Heine-University Medical School in Düsseldorf, Germany. During his medical studies, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in cell biology at Harvard Medical School, followed by an internship at McKinsey & Company in Munich, Germany, and a Carlo Schmid Fellowship at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Meves graduated summa cum laude as Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med.) and received a cash prize for his outstanding medical dissertation. He then pursued a residency in dermatology and a fellowship in advanced clinical dermatology at Mayo Clinic, where he developed a keen interest in skin cancer, particularly melanoma, and skin aging. He later completed postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Reinhard Fässler at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich, where his research focused on the biology of skin cancer and skin aging, with a specific focus on connective tissue and the extracellular matrix. In 2021, Dr. Meves completed the prestigious M.B.A. program at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, complementing his medical and research expertise with advanced business skills. Dr. Meves is a well-published author, with numerous books, peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and other written publications to his credit. He has given presentations on his research both domestically and internationally, receiving several awards and honors, including the Physician in Training Award conferred by the American Society of Dermatopathology, the Palmer and Gerstner Family Awards conferred by Mayo Clinic, and a Career Development Award (K08) conferred by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Meves is also the co-inventor of the Merlin test for melanoma risk-stratification, a gene expression-based test that is commercially available through SkylineDx and is currently being validated in a multi-center registry study in the United States. In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Meves is a dedicated mentor and educator, training graduate students and dermatology residents in molecular laboratory techniques. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology. With his broad expertise in dermatology, research, and business, Dr. Meves continues to make significant contributions to the field of dermatology, with a focus on translating basic research into new and innovative methods to diagnose and treat skin cancer.
