Abstract

This study and work project is to address the communication problem suffered by people with hearing problems and disabilities, called deaf and to provide an easy communication with them.

The work is a programming based project using LabVIEWTM ;the virtual programming language from National Instruments, which is divided to two parts. First, in order to enable talking to a deaf, the program will capture and scan voice to a Look Up Table LUT and then display the video of the sign corresponding to the spoken word on a digital screen. The second part enables listening to a deaf by detecting the language sign through a camera and compares it with previously reserved ones. This is another LUT which will play the sound corresponding to the detected sign. It can be used in smart devices as a standalone application. Several techniques were used in implementing the working project. The adopted language used is the ASL (American Sign Language).

The Translator would save money and effort that will be required to teach sign language to many people in order to integrate those with hearing disabilities into society more efficiently, as well as enhancing their abilities for better and further education.
