The proposed research will focus on reverse logistics and recycling in the manufacturing and recycling industries of South Africa. Relevant stakeholders in the reverse logistics chain will be identified and incorporated in the strategies to be developed for sustainable management of plastic waste. A quantitative and qualitative research approach will be used for data collection from different stakeholders. A life cycle assessment will be conducted to determine and outline the environmental and social impacts of recycling. This study will be conducted by two research partners. One team will be from South Africa and the other from Switzerland.

The results from this research will be used for the development and implementation of environmental conscious strategies for sustainable plastic waste management in South Africa.
