Abstract

In Film industry the word cybercrime is usually used interchangeably with piracy. The word cybercrime describes an activity that materializes in the world of computer and Internet computer crime. It is an illegal behavior directed by means of electronic operations that targets the security of computer systems and the data processed by them. This paper will focus on the origins, forms and manifestation of cybercrimes in Nollywood films. The main objective is to find possible solutions to maximize films profits. Cybercrime have been the greatest global challenge not only in Africa but also in America, Asia Europe, and other continents. Most people have been involved in piracy knowingly or unknowingly and for some this has become a normal business hub. The lack of education on forms of cybercrime like counterfeiting has resulted in Nollywood not to fully explore itself as most filmmakers struggle to break even, even after producing so many low budget films. The introduction of internet has also largely contributed in exacerbating the practice of cybercrime as film consumers have easy access to different illegal websites to download films from. This paper also seek to raise an awareness to consumers and find probable measures to minimize cybercrime.
