Abstract

This study reviews different computer tools used for planning and modelling electric power generation. The targeted models are those used to analyse the integration of renewable energy and low carbon sources for low carbon electricity generation. The study prescribes information or factors to consider in the identification of suitable electricity planning tools for sustainable electricity which requires the integration of renewable energy, storage and smart energy systems is provided. The study showed that there is no single electricity modelling tool that addresses all sustainability and other concerns related to the transition of the electricity sector. The selection of appropriate tools is a function of the application of specific model objectives to be fulfilled and factors like cost, accuracy and parameters as guided by the available analysis data. Various models were identified and reviewed based technologies accounted for, model availability, time parameters used, and previous studies. The paper provides information needed to guide planners in model selection and application to realise sustainable electricity. Models identified as appropriate for sustainable energy planning in include HOMER, Green smith Energy Management System (GEMS), AEOLIUS model, and National Electricity Market Optimiser (NEMO) among others
