For a mining future to be possible, mining and metal companies must change mindsets and business models as sustainability becomes imperative. Technological transformation is a key enabler for the future of mining, and this research explores the intention of mining organisations in South Africa to adopt digital technology. The study identified the factors associated with the organisations’ adoption of digital technology and intended digital transformation. Although all forms of innovation are important, digital technologies are more likely to impact multiple productivity factors more because they can transform the mine business model from start to end. A qualitative study was employed to ascertain the level of adoption of digital technology across mines in South Africa and determine the drivers that influence the adoption of digital technology and the barriers that impede its adoption.
The results from a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews indicated a willingness to adopt digital technology across various mining organisations. The key drivers were improved safety and increased productivity, whilst top management was the greatest enabler to embrace digital technology. Cost of technology and return on investment were the most significant barriers to digital technology adoption.
