Abstract

The project is a system that simplifies the process of taking the student's attendance and it saves effort and time for students and instructors. The attendance is taken by the student's university ID card by scanning it with the barcode scanner device. Nowadays, the attendance is taken by using the traditional ways: calling student's names, students write their names and IDs on a paper, or putting (√) next to student's name. The disadvantages of using these ways are: it takes time from the lecture, student, and instructor. Moreover, it consumes effort from instructors when they transfer the attendance data to the computer manually.

    The system works by linking the barcode scanner with MS Excel software. First, the student's ID card is scanned using the barcode scanner. Then, the data is saved to an excel sheet automatically. We conclude that using the barcode scanner attendance system is faster and easier. The system can be improved by linking it with the university's central database or prototyping a new software which meets university attendance requirements. To achieve a great benefit, the student should keep their ID cards with them and university should set strict behavior rules for cheating on attendance.
