Abstract

A prominent American company specializing in timberland management and timber product processing has experienced frequent minor stoppages on one of its press lines used for pressing and curing glue-coated veneer lamination. A team from Northwestern State University's Department of Engineering Technology was tasked with investigating whether these minor stoppages significantly impact production yield and identifying the factors contributing to these stoppages.

The study utilized a method engineering approach, involving comprehensive data collection on downtime, including detailed records of stoppages, their durations, and monthly totals. Conventional statistical methods were employed to analyze this data, supplemented by observations and interviews with engineers and operators. Contrary to the prevailing hypothesis, the analysis revealed that minor stoppages have a substantial effect on yield.

To address this issue, a recovery plan was developed, focusing on adjustments to line speed and an examination of incoming veneer quality and its effects on the infeed site, including sequence stops in the lay area. The study identified two major sources of minor stops directly related to veneer quality. Recommendations were provided to the client, emphasizing the need for strategic adjustments to improve plant efficiency. These findings have been instrumental in justifying a review by higher management, with the potential to enhance plant performance.

This collaborative project has provided valuable insights and boosted the team members' confidence, marking a significant step in their professional development.
